Whole World of Herbs Newsletter

Dear Lovers of Herbs and the Planet Earth,

Spring and the renewal of nature have also renewed us. My relationship with the plants in the Amazon rainforest and the local people who supply Whole World Botanicals with wildcrafted botanicals, have made me more aware and appreciative of plants and nature - even in New York City. I have started foraging for edible foods in the larger parks of New York City and in the “disturbed areas” around woods within an hour of the City. This activity adds amazing variety to my diet as well as novel tastes for my palate, and is somehow deeply satisfying. I highly recommend foraging which belonged to all of our ancestors - if you make sure that the area where you are collecting plants or plant parts to eat have not been chemically sprayed! Also make sure that you get expert advice: in some plants the flowers are edible but the leaves and stems or the roots are poisonous. In others, the fruit is toxic but the stem is tasty and nourishing - well, you get the idea!

How to Lower your LDL Cholesterol Naturally

Many of us strive to maintain healthy cholesterol levels. For the vegans among us this is not an issue, but if you eat any form of meat or dairy products on a regular basis, it’s a good idea to get your cholesterol levels checked at least once a year. Of course, there is a genetic component to how your body makes cholesterol too; some people are able to eat a higher than ideal amount of animal fat and still maintain healthy cholesterol levels while others are not.

Most of the readers of this Newsletter will be aware of the fact that it is simplistic and wrong to think that high cholesterol is “bad” and good cholesterol is “bad.” There are actually two forms of cholesterol—the HDL (high density lipid) form is essential for good health and provides the basis for the body making its own hormones. The LDL cholesterol can form fatty deposits in the arteries and lead to atherosclerosis.

Some of you have written to me (organicmacalady@yahoo.com) asking if WWB has a product that can help lower LDL cholesterol. One man recently wrote: “My doctor put me on a statin drug for my high cholesterol and it causes me terrible pain all over my body. I want to get off this drug. Do you have something that could help me?” Although Whole World Botanicals does not give medical advice and strongly advises against patients treating themselves without being followed by a physician, we do make available research literature on our products which you can share with your doctor.

Scientific studies suggest that Chanca Piedra, which Whole World Botanicals sells as our Royal Break-Stone products, is very effective for lowering LDL cholesterol. See photo above of Chanca piedra growing wild in the Northeast Amazon region. One study found that this herb (botanical name Chanca Piedra) works in four ways to promote a healthy LDL cholesterol level.

How Break-Stone herb works to lower LDL cholesterol:

  • Inhibition of cholesterol biosynthesis
  • Increased fecal bile acids excretion
  • Increased plasma lecithin
  • Cholesterol acyltransferase activity

To get a citation for this study and read a summary, go to the Break-Stone (Phyllanthus niruri or Chanca Piedra) section of the Herbal Library on Whole World Botanicals’ website.  In our next Newsletter we will discuss the importance of each of the activities listed above for liver health.

SOCIAL ACTION: Whole World Botanicals funds sustainable development of Peruvian rainforest community

We have spent the last two years working with an impoverished community of 30 families in the cloud rainforest of the Central Sierra to develop an amazing new Peruvian rainforest product for all of you, a product which, while nourishing our bodies in a unique way, will help maintain the integrity of the Amazon river basin. Two years ago Whole World Botanicals was approached by an NGO (nongovernmental organization) which works to help impoverished rural populations develop cash crops to supplement their subsistence agriculture. Knowing our track record of Fair Trade and assistance to our botanical suppliers, WWB was asked to provide almost $600 per family to help them develop an organic cash crop for which there was already a market established in Europe and Asia.

We know the challenges of introducing a totally unknown botanical to the U.S. market, but this product was so attractive and would make such a special contribution to our therapeutic botanicals in the U.S. while at the same time helping to develop a sustainable rainforest cash crop. But the drop in the exchange rate of our dollars with the Peruvian soles has been so steep in the past year that it is no longer an affordable product except for the wealthy among U.S. consumers. So our new product development is “on hold” until the international finances of the U.S. improves and this product becomes affordable to U.S. consumers.

Meanwhile, the farmers whom WWB have assisted are enjoying great success in exporting their products. We at Whole World Botanicals feel certain that it is just a matter of time before the international economics shift in a more favorable direction for offering this fine Peruvian product to all of you.

Elena’s News: New Feature starting in this Newsletter

Elena Rojas Martinez is the “other” co-founder of Whole World Botanicals.  Some of you know her through the “About the Founders” section of the www.wholeworldbotanicals.com website.  Her multifaceted Peruvian background involving different healing traditions and her training and practice of her midwifery profession prepared her for her future work and gave her a unique vision in co-founding a natural products company based on Peruvian botanicals.  Elena spends much of the year in Peru doing the hands-on work necessary with the people and the plants in order to bring to our customers the premium quality therapeutic botanicals which make up the Whole World Botanicals product line and to uphold the values we practice in our relationships with the native suppliers.

Starting in this issue, some Newsletters will feature Elena’s News as well as Viana’s News.  Elena is in Peru for the months of May & June.  See below for her latest news related to the Peruvian people and its botanicals.

World Wide Food Crisis is Also Affecting Peru

Elena reports that Peru has not escaped the worldwide food crisis which has sharply raised the prices of food staples such as corn, wheat, and rice in the last three months.  One of the reasons for this sudden and exaggerated rise in food prices is the increasing use of food plants for biofuel, which has meant taking millions of acres out of food production and into energy production, thus reducing the available supply of food.  Another contributing factor to this food crisis is the unprecedented number and severity of natural disasters—part of our climate change crisis, including droughts and floods which have ruined crops and reduced the available food supply.

The third factor which you won't see discussed on network TV

But there is a third factor, which may well be the most decisive one and it has been building for decade.  With the signing of free trade agreements between developed countries, such as the U.S. and developing (or third world) countries, U.S. wheat and corn, heavily subsidized by the U.S. government has been allowed to enter the poor countries and compete with the small farmers who grow wheat, corn, and rice locally, essentially putting them out of business by “dumping” – selling their products below the cost of production – made possible by government subsidies.  Much of the worldwide food supply is now in the hands of mega million dollar corporations which trade on the stock exchange.  This food is treated like any other commodity and can be purchased on the futures market and become an important part of the hedge fund portfolio of large investors.… To continue reading click here

Viana on the Radio in Georgia!

For those of you who live in the Atlanta, Georgia area, you can hear me every Thursday on Dr. Chris Green’s program “Wake Up to Nutrition” from 11 a.m. to 12 noon at WGUN Radio. I have been Dr. Chris’ guest once a week on his fascinating program since just before Thanksgiving last year. These programs are providing me a great opportunity to share with the radio audience the positive outcomes so many of you, our customers, have shared with me. The program format allows me to discuss in depth some of the more important research findings related to those botanicals.

Wishing you a healthy, nature filled, fabulous summer!

Hasta pronto! (Expect another Newsletter from us next month.)
