This month I put the Health Action request right at the top of my Newsletter. I urgently request you to call your two U.S. Senators with a request for them to VOTE AGAINST Food & Drug Administration (FDA) Revitalization Act, S.1082. This bill sponsored by Senator Ted Kennedy, would overturn DHSEA Act of 1994 and give FDA increased regulatory authority over your herbal supplements.
We have also added the following sections:
URGENT – You are in immediate danger of having FDA take another step to take away your right to freely purchase vitamin, herbal, and probiotic supplements in health food stores and on the Internet.
PLEASE ACT NOW to prevent FDA from greatly restricting your access to herbal supplements. In Canada it is no longer possible for health food stores to order most of Whole World Botanicals’s products. It could happen in the U.S. too.

In addition to calling the U.S. Senators who represent my state, I called Senators Hatch and Harkin, two Senators who have sponsored legislation supportive of dietary supplements in the past about this legislation. Senator Harkin's assistant told me that their is misinformation circulating on the Internet and that this legislation does not restrict anyone's access to dietary supplements (vitamins, minerals, probiotics and herbs). I told her that one of our (Whole World Botanicals') FDA attorneys, Jonathan Emord, who heads a highly respected U.S. law firm which specializes in dealing with FDA regulations is in total disagreement with Senator Harkin and that he has drafted an amendment to the bill that would include the removal of the words "food" and "food ingredients." The Senator's assistant said that this bill "has nothing to do with regulation of dietary supplements." I asked her that if this is the case then why are the words "food" and "food ingredient" part of this bill? Since she was silent, I made a follow-up request: "Can you please ask Senator Harkin to request the removal of the words "food" and "food ingredient" from this piece of legislation.

In addition to the above letter it is important to call Senator Hatch (202-224-5251) and Senator Harkin (202-224-3254) and leave a message telling them that you are very concerned that bill S1082 will gives the FDA new power to undermine DSHEA (Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act) and that you request they insert the following amendment into the legislation to avoid any possibility that dietary supplements will be evaluated as drugs. New Information on Camu-Camu
We keep finding out more amazing properties to the Camu-Camu berries, especially the ones like ours which are hand harvested, wild-crafted and flash-frozen on a freezer boat the same day they are picked. News on Royal Desmodium

I am getting ready to go to Peru again this summer. Remember when we took a solar cooker to Peru more than a year ago and introduced solar cooking to the maca growing communities at 14,000 feet above sea level? Well, we realized that as nifty as solar cookery is, especially when you don’t have adequate access to firewood for doing your cooking and need to use dried animal dung, if your only source of heat is your cooking fire, both you, your family and your guinea pigs are not going to be very happy when you take your cooking outdoors to “go solar.” So we had to back up and look at the solar project in a new way. On this upcoming trip we have a genius solar energy guru with lots of experience in Third World projects to help the maca growers learn how to make their own passive solar energy collectors out of inexpensive local materials. In the dry season (late April through mid-September) the temperature goes up to 70 or even 75 degrees Fahrenheit but plunges to freezing temperatures at night. In the wet season (mid-September through early April) it rains very frequently and the damp cold goes right through you, although the temperature rarely drops below 45 degrees and does not rise above 55 or 60 degrees. (On the coast of Peru (where Lima and Arequipa are), we can more clearly recognize summer and winter, with the seasons being the reverse of what they are in the northern hemisphere.)
