A: Royal Desmodium Strong Back is based on a tropical, rainforest botanical which grows in South America, Central America and the Caribbean. The botanical name for this plant is Desmodium adscendens. It is a small plant with delicate leaves and it takes many, many dried plants to produce an herbal extract. In Jamaica it is known as “Strong Back” herb and in Peru it is often called Amor Seco (watch out—many different plant species have this name!).
There is some good research on this herb—most of it from Ghana, where it is also a native species! Strong Back relaxes muscles and in most back pain, at least 50% of the pain experienced is caused by the muscles in the back going into spasm near the injury. Studies indicate that Desmodium adscendens also encourages the body’s own healthy inflammation response (Cox Type I). And so it is really working in two different ways to give minor and occasional pain relief in cases of trauma to the body.
