Is Royal Break-Stone (Chanca piedra) safe to take while breast feeding?

Breakstone Plant

Q: I would like to recommend your Royal Break-Stone Kidney Support Liquid Extract (Chanca Piedra) to a patient who has kidney stones, but she is nursing her three month old baby boy. Would this be safe for the baby? Have you heard of any toxicity issues or side effects that could be harmful?

Dr. E. M. (naturopathic doctor) Texas

A: We have checked with one of our Peruvian plant pharmacologists with whom we work in Peru and who is very familiar with both the scientific active plant components in Phyllanthus niruri (Chanca Piedra) and traditional usage. He says there is nothing in this plant which could harm your patient’s baby.

As always, however, as a health care practitioner you know that different people have different and individual reactions to herbs. Fortunately, she will be under your care and you can monitor her. As you know this botanical is also used to support the health of liver and gall bladder and also support a healthy cholesterol level and a LDL-HDL ratio.
