Q: Is Camu-Camu an anti-viral herb?

Royal Camu Capsules

Several years ago an article on your web site said that Camu Camu was anti-viral and helped control the herpes viruses. I use your Royal Camu for cold sores and it does control outbreaks. I know it also helps keep cold sores from breaking out because I use it for this purpose.

Susan S. (MD)

A: If it’s not on our website, it’s because of concerns related to the FDA. However, Dr. James Duke names it as a powerful anti-viral on his USDA sponsored website with the disclaimer that the information he is providing is not meant to diagnose, prevent or treat disease.

Camu-Camu contains a high level of natural Vitamin C — about 50 times the amount found in strawberries or oranges, pound for pound. You could eat 1/4 pound of Camu-Camu berries or 10 1/2 pounds of strawberries to get the same amount of Vitamin C. There are literally hundreds of published scientific studies on Vitamin C which show that it is a powerful anti-viral. We have numerous testimonials from people suffering from some form of the herpes virus–cold sores, genital herpes or shingles– who have benefitted from taking our Royal Camu. Our product contains 8-10% natural Vitamin C, by weight, when first manufactured. Its Vitamin C content decreases very gradually over two years and has a shelf life of three years. Most companies selling Camu-Camu do not guarantee any level of natural Vitamin C derived from the fruit and if they do it is very low.

The problem with making claims for Camu-Camu as an anti-viral botanical is that this goes against the FDA regulations, even though the scientific evidence is abundantly there! Until there is a successful legal challenge to those rules, we are stuck with them.
