In perimenopause, a woman’s periods may become very heavy, if she is estrogen dominant. Many women tend to be estrogen dominant as their progesterone level drops significantly and she has a menstrual period without ovulation. Other women’s periods become irregular and light as their body produces a lower level of both estradiol and of progesterone. At this point, she may develop severe PMS, including mood swings, and even hot flashes and difficulty sleeping.
Once a woman’s menstrual cycle develops a “stop and start” pattern all of her perimenopausal symptoms may get worse, with moderate or severe hot flashes, vaginal dryness, loss of libido (your body needs enough estrogen to make testosterone).
Many women start to take so-called bioidentical estrogen and progesterone made from plants during perimenopause. The problem is that the estrogen part of the hormones taken is 100% estradiol and the added progesterone hormone will usually be ineffective in resolving estrogen-dominant conditions, such as uterine fibroids and ovarian and breast cysts.
Unlike studies with Premirin and Prevera, the so-called bioidentical hormones have not been studied. Some doctors have stopped recommending them after they saw some of their patients on these hormones develop breast cancer.
A more natural way to balance hormones is to take Maca Root, which is thought to work by helping your circulating hormones—including progesterone, thyroid and adrenal hormones—to bind better to the hormone receptors in your body. Royal Maca is absolutely the best Maca available. Royal Maca is recommended both by Dr. Susan Lark, M.D. and by Mary Shomon, author of numerous books on women’s health, including thyroid and menopause. It is certified organic, sundried to raise the level of hormone-balancing phyto-nutrients, and cooked (native Peruvians NEVER eat their maca raw) by a special proprietary process which reduces the carbohydrates and concentrates the hormone-balancing nutrients in the root. It is available in vegetarian and gelatin capsules and also in powder form, to be mixed with yogurt, juice, cereal, or to make a tea. It is so strong that you need a tiny amount for hormone balance and is very cost effective for this reason.
