A: When I was in the high Andes of Peru back in 1994 researching the maca root and preparing to introduce it into the United States as a supplement, I interviewed many Peruvians from the maca growing area to discover what native people had to say about maca’s properties. One young man told me, “You have to watch out not to take too much maca. Quema el higado (“it burns the liver”).
Based on that piece of folk wisdom, I subsequently advised people with liver disease to be very cautious about taking Royal Maca. But now, 15 years later, with much more experience, I have found that taking too much maca causes all kinds of problems, not just problems with the liver. However, the good and perhaps surprising news is that scientific studies are emerging which suggest that maca root actually supports healthy liver function.
