Q: I am 5ft. 1 in. and weigh 155 lbs. I have been in menopause more than a year and have been dealing with hot flashes every day. So far I don’t have any other symptoms like depression, vaginal dryness, etc. I bought your product in a health food store and was advised to start with two capsules of Royal Maca a day. For the first month, Royal Maca worked like a dream. I got rid of all of my hot flashes. Then they started coming back and now they are worse than ever. I’m getting about 15 hot flashes a day I’ve read on your website that if a woman is petite or very sensitive in general to herbs or medications that she will need to cut her dose in half. But as you can see at my weight, I am not petite and I don’t think I have strong reactions to other herbs I have taken or to medications. What do you suggest for dosage to get back the hormone balance I experienced in the first month of taking Royal Maca? Ann M. (Santa Fe, NM)
A: As you have probably read on the Whole World Botanicals’ website, if you take too much Royal Maca, your hot flashes will increase. It may be hard to believe that 2 capsules daily is too much for a woman with hot flashes—but then, maybe you should consider yourself petite. It’s confusing when you are carrying a lot of extra weight and yet you are only 5 ft. 1 in.– which is definitely considered “petite” in terms of height. So, we can guess that you probably need to take half the starting dose of 2 capsules – which would mean one capsule daily. What makes it even more interesting is that the fat cells in our body are little estrogen factories and produce estrone, one of the 3 general types of estrogen which our body makes. That’s another reason you will need less Royal Maca than a slim woman. If cutting back to one capsule daily makes your hot flashes much better but still doesn’t get you back to the beautiful “no hot flash” situation of your first month on the product, try taking the capsules in a 1-2-1-2 pattern, or even a 1-1-2, 1-1-2 pattern. Just keep experimenting in order to reach your perfect adjustment again.
