Can the Phyto-Estrogens in soy and flax seeds be combined with Royal Maca?

Royal Maca All

Dear Whole World Botanicals,

I am interested in trying Royal Maca as a natural hormone balancing dietary supplement. I noticed the warning statement on your bottle that combining Royal Maca with estrogen (or estrogenic herbs) could cause an increase in hot flashes and other symptoms.

I am a vegetarian who eats soy products a few times per week (not on a daily basis). Since soy is known to be rich in phyto-estrogen properties do you advise against the use of Royal Maca when eating soy or other foods like flax seeds? Any insight you can give on this will be appreciated. – Wendy

Dear Wendy,

Your question is a good one.  Research has shown that soy foods, such as soy milk, tempeh, etc. do not contain enough isoflavones (estrogenic compounds) to actually affect hormone balance.  Flax, which contains lignans, another phyto-estrogen, is the same story.  Dietary supplements in which isoflavones or lignans have been isolated from the plants and concentrated into a pill do  possess some mild hormone balancing properties created by the attachment of these plant estrogens to the estrogen receptors in your body.   However, although these supplements don’t work really well on their own, they do interfere, in most women, with the hormone-balancing properties contained in a premium quality Maca Root product like Royal Maca. Royal Maca works best by itself, or, for women who are prone to inflammation, combined with DIM.

So enjoy your soy foods and your flax seed oil. There is absolutely no problem of combining the Royal Maca with any foods containing plant estrogens. Viana Muller, Ph.D., Co-founder, Whole World Botanicals.
