Does Maca Root have hormone stimulating properties –
or only hormone balancing properties?
Recently Whole World Botanicals received the following question from a new customer who suffers from Multiple Sclerosis.
Q: Could you please clarify/elaborate more on the stimulating properties of the Royal Maca? I understand your instruction below to start small and watch...however, with MS/auto-immune, you often have no way to tell whether the condition is being stimulated. It happens silently and internally. From my study, it seems that some herbs/botanicals are innately stimulating and others are, by nature, only immune building (for example, garlic is stimulating regardless of whether you have even a tiny amount). Are there any studies that have been done with Maca and auto-immune conditions? A: No. If you take too much for your body, you may feel anxious, have insomnia, etc. This is a sign of overstimulation. Although Maca Root acts as a tonic and helps the body recover from deficiencies of various kinds, it does not stimulate the body in the sense of making it work better for a whole and then depleting the body. In that sense, coffee is stimulating and so is alcohol (although technically considered a depressant). |

Sugar in all forms is also stimulating—giving a short burst of energy and then causing fatigue. Some aphrodisiacs are also stimulating but may also cause depletion and neurological side effects. Maca Root can be stimulating if too much is taken every day over a period of several days—or longer. For example, a man who takes Maca Root to support his libido and a healthy erectile function takes too much for his body, it will likely provide that support for a few days but then he will notice an absolute let down, with slight depression, loss of libido, and low energy in general.
However, if taken at the right amount for your body, it is not overstimulating. It is hormone modulating, and Whole World Botanicals has had excellent feedback from customers taking Royal Maca who have various kinds of auto-immune conditions, including arthritis, Hashimoto’s Disease, multiple Sclerosis, and fibromyalgia. The effects generally include: an increase in energy, a bright, happy mood, improved sleep, as well as some other improvements such as body temperature and healthy hair growth, to name only two. Some research suggests that it reduces the number of inflammatory cytokines produced by the body as well. See our Herbal Research Section of this website to read more.
